- Story Text: Protesters clash with police in central Madrid during a general strike against austerity.
Spanish anti-riot police and protesters clashed and several arrests were made on Wednesday in central Madrid during a general strike against austerity measures imposed in the wake of the debt crisis.
Two protesters were arrested and police hit others with night-sticks.
Earlier, police arrested 42 people around Spain as scuffles broke out at picket lines.
Spain's unions have called the general strike to protest at spending cuts and tax hikes. It is the second time this year that a general strike is organised.
Millions of workers across southern Europe were on strike to protest against government spending cuts.
The biggest strikes are in Spain and Portugal, where transport and factories were widely affected. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
