- Story Text: German employees at mail order company Amazon went on strike over pay for a second day on Tuesday (June 18), with distribution centres in Bad Hersfeld and Leipzig affected by the walkout.
Trade union Verdi is demanding Amazon pay its employees according to retail trade and mail order firm tariffs which are higher than Amazon's wages based on the logistics sector.
The head of Verdi union, Frank Bsirske told Amazon employees on strike at the Bad Hersfeld plant that "there is easily a ten, eleven thousand euro difference for colleagues who are new in the business. With a yearly salary of just under 20,000 euros, a difference of 10,000 euros is a third less than what others earn for similar work."
According to union estimates, some 800 Amazon employees were expected to participate in the two-day strike.
A representative of Verdi union was quoted on Monday (June 17) as saying that Amazon employees were getting "angrier and angrier" after their company was "not moving an inch on the issue of wages." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
