- Story Text: Thousands of secondary school students marched to the Education Ministry in Santiago on Wednesday (May 10) demanding free transport and tuition, and university access.
With traffic grinding to a halt on the city's main streets, the protest turned violent after police arrived to stop the march. Violent clashes ensued with students throwing stones and other objects at police and mounting barricades.
Police used water canons to disperse the demonstrators, many of whom were marching with their faces covered and carrying video cameras to record any evidence of police brutality.
Police arrested 80 students at the march, which had been convened by student leaders as part of a day of protests throughout the country. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
