- Story Text: Teachers in Buenos Aires province celebrated on Saturday (March 29) then end of a 17-day strike after reaching an agreement with government negotiators on salary.
Classes are set to start on Monday (March 31), beginning the 2014 school year.
"Fortunately, because of the fight of the teachers and the support of the parents, on Monday, we are going to take our children to school having improved a little more the conditions of public school," said union official, Roberto Baradel.
Earlier this week, a resolution looked unlikely as the Bonearense Teachers Front Union rejected a 31 percent pay increase for teachers from Buenos Aires provincial government, telling media the deal fell far short of double-digit inflation figures in the country.
In other provinces throughout Argentina, agreements have not yet been reached and teachers continue protesting, with intermittent strikes.
Unions across Argentina are closely watching how the government has responded to teachers' demands.
If successful, experts believe it may pave the way for further industrial action in other professions as currency devaluation and skyrocketing inflation eat into real wages. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
