Striking black miners in South Africa vowed on August 16 to continue their industrial action over wages and safety issues. The strike has now entered its second week, with an estimated 300,000 miners taking part. Leaders of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) met in Johannesburg on August 16. They said the strike had been successful, and they called on mine management to accede to union demands. The strike has been marked by sporadic fighting between striking miners and security forces, and Cyril Ramaphosa, leader of the NUM, called on mining companies to allow independent observers on to mine sites. Meanwhile, other black miners from the goldfields mines near to Johannesburg have said that they too will join the industrial action. The goldfields workers do not operate through the NUM but said they would take industrial action as a sign of support. The strike has been well organised, with material support being made available for those taking part.
