- Story Text: Nurses at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, stasged a sit-down strike on Thursday (31 October).
They were protesting against poor working conditions which they said were in need of urgent review.
The nurses also said that pay increases promised to them had not yet been paid and that they needed transport to and from work. Some of the nurses live more than 20 miles (32 kms) from the hospital.
Earlier in the day, Ghana's Commissioner for Health, Major A.H. Selormey want to the hospital and appealed to the nurses to return to work. The striking Nurses replied that they would await the arrival of their colleagues coming to relieve them at work before ending their strike.
While the strike was going on services at the hospital were curtailed and many patients had to wait for medical attention.
