- Story Text: Tens of thousands of Parisians walked, cycled or
rollerbladed to work on Wednesday when public transport was
paralysed by a surprise strike staged by Metro employees after
one of their colleagues was assaulted and badly injured.
Most of the French capital's Metro lines shut down
during the morning rush hour.Only three of the 14 lines had
near-normal traffic, the Paris Transport Authority RATP said.
The streets and sidewalks of Paris were a strange sight --
packed with commuters marching off to work.
Buses continued running until monster traffic jams led most
bus drivers to stop work as well.
The RER express underground railway was also badly hit with
traffic running at only six to 17 percent of normal.
Many stores were shut because shopkeepers had trouble
getting in to work.
The injured employee, who was attacked by peddlers, was in a
coma.
