- Story Text: Striking employees of the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority marched through the streets of the capital, Nicosia, last Sunday and later picketed the palace of President Makarios.
The strikers are asking for increased wages and say they can hold out for three months on union reserve funds. The strike began on November 23. Telephone and cable links both inside and outside Cyprus have been cut off and emergency services for calling the fire brigade and ambulance are beginning to fail as the automatic exchange break down. Because communications personnel at Cyprus international airport are also on strike, members of Britain's Royal Air Force are operating the flight information centre at the airport. President Makarios has accused the strikers of a "blackmail policy" in their strike for more pay.
