- Story Text: The United Nations (U.N.) said on Monday (March 27) it was ready to ask for NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) air strikes against Bosnian Serb artillery which has targeted civilians inside "safe areas".
The statement, signalling a major change in policy in Bosnia-Herzegovina, was made after recent Serb attacks on the Bosnian "safe areas" of Sarajevo, Bihac, Tuzla and Goradze.
The latest clash between government and Serb forces took place in the Jewish cemetery area of Sarajevo on Sunday. Several detonations and the sound of gunfire were heard.
"Attacks which come from outside a safe area and which deliberately target civilians will meet a resolute response from us including the use of air power," said Colum Murphy, a spokesman for Lieutenant-General Rupert Smith, the United Nations (U.N.) commander in Bosnia.
Recent Bosnian government gains in the south-west and north-east of Bosnia could not be confirmed by the U.N. Protection Forces (UNPROFOR) as access to these areas is limited, but UNPROFOR believe the Bosnian Serb Army have made gains of some 50 square kilometres (30 square miles) in the Travnik and Tuzla areas.
There was still tension in Sarajevo on Monday as people ran along Sniper Alley, close to the Jewish cemetery.
