- Story Text: French commuters, frustrated at more than a fortnight of crippling strikes, turned the tables on the transport workers on Sunday (December 10) and staged their own protest.
More than 1,500 demonstrators staged a rally in the centre of Paris demanding the reinstatement of some services on the Paris underground Metro and city bus routes so they could get to work.
Public sector workers, including bus and train drivers, walked out 17 days ago over government plans to reform the country's welfare system. The stoppage has caused chaos throughout France and left hundreds of thousands of commuters stranded.
At a march and rally in Paris, non-strikers called for a bill in Parliament to be passed ordering that a mimimum transport service be maintained.
They carried banners proclaiming their support for Prime Minister Alain Juppe and accused the strikers of holding France hostage.
Juppe held emergency talks with key cabinet ministers on Sunday on the country's worst unrest for a decade.
Negotiations between the government and trade unions on Saturday had ended with union leaders calling for an escalation of the strikes.
