- Story Text: The Salvadoran government threatened public transport strikers on Thursday (February 22) with implementing the law to "it's fullest" if the strikers did not return to work.
The striking bus drivers blocked several avenues and streets, by strategically placing hundreds of buses at important intersections of the capital and the interior.
Disturbances broke out between the National Civil Police (PNC) force and the strikers when the PNC tried to break up the protest.
The PNC, dressed in anti-riot gear, threw tear gas at the protesters. The strikers responded by throwing stones at the police.
Luis Galdanez, a Reuters photographer, was hit in the head with a rock and had to be taken in for medical attention.
The Vice-Minister of Transportation Julio Valdivieso accused the strikers of hurting the people of El Salvador.
"They aren't hurting the government. They are hurting the people, those who use the buses. We will take drastic measures to curtail this protest." The president of the bus-owners association, Hector Bonilla, denied the accusations made by the government, but admitted that subersive groups had joined the protestors, at whose request he did not know.
Thousands of Salvadorans were affected by the strike, walking long distances to work.
