- Story Text: NATO warplanes using night vision gear bombed Bosnian Serb positions around the clock as a crucial preparatory round of peace talks opened on Friday (September 8) in Geneva.
United Nations spokesman Alexander Ivanko said the operation would continue until the threat to Sarajevo was suppressed. He added that the Bosnian Serbs had so far shown no signs of removing their heavy weapons from around the city.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) began the air raids on August 30 to force Bosnian Serbs to withdraw heavy weapons from a 20-km (12-mile) exclusion zone and open land and air access to Sarajevo.
It was suspended for four days then restarted last Tuesday. To date, NATO pilots have flown 2,000 sorties.
The latest operations have hit bridges and major roads, in a bid to stop the re-supply of Bosnian Serb units.
Croatian artillery from the Grahovo-Glamoc area shelled the town of Drvar in Bosnia on Thursday (September 7), according to Bosnian Serb Army sources.
One civilian was killed and six others wounded in the attack on the town, Bosnian Serb sources said. More than 500 rounds landed in the area, destroying 10 civilian facilities and leaving a paper and wood-processing factory in flames.
The attack was one of the strongest Croatian attacks on Drvar since the town first came under Croatian fire in early August.
