- Story Text: Students at Romain-Rolland, a state secondary school in Goussainville, Paris, returned to study on Tuesday (September 27) after a week-long strike protesting against a government ban on headscarves.
The protest started after four young Moslem women students were excluded from the school.
The students at Romain-Rolland have only returned under a temporary truce after teachers promised talks. Many believe the ban to be stupid and discriminatory.
The French education ministry earlier in September banned "ostentatious religious symbols" in its schools, including the scarves worn by some Moslem women, saying they challenged the supremacy of French law and prevented integration with French society.
There are about five million Moslems in France, most from North Africa, out of a total population of about 56 million.
Only a few hundred Moslem women are believed to wear headscarves to school, although the custom appears to be getting more popular. Islamic law does not require young Moslem women to wear them, but some choose to do so as a personal choice and symbol of their beliefs.
