- Story Text: A general strike was declared on Wednesday (October 26) in the Israeli-occupied territories and East Jerusalem in protest against the role envisioned for Jordan in Jerusalem's holy sites in the Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty.
Meanwhile in west Jerusalem Israeli school children placed red roses on the graves of 18,064 Israeli soldiers killed during the Israeli-Arab wars.
Shops were closed throughout East Jerusalem and the West Bank in accordance with the strike called by the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) and the Moslem militant organisation Hamas, on Wednesday - the day Israel and Jordan were to sign a peace treaty.
In the West Bank city of Nablus, clashes erupted between Palestinian youths and Israeli soldiers.
Palestinian youths gathered at the city centre and hurled stones and rocks at passing Israeli vehicles and at Israeli troops.
The soldiers retalliated by firing tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition. There were no reports of injuries.
Security was tight around the Israeli capital ahead of United States (U.S.) President Bill Clinton's visit to Jerusalem.
Israeli police were deployed along key roads in Jerusalem, and dozens of U.S. flags were flying in the streets.
