- Story Text: INTRO: Thousands of Greek transport workers have gone on strike for 24 hours as seamen ended a crippling 10-day dispute.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- The biggest labour confederation in Greece, GSEE, organised a 24-hour nationwide walkout on Thursday (January 23) in protest at a revised taxation system.
The strike hit transport and all public services, which had to operate with greatly reduced numbers of workers.
Thursday's action cooincided with the end of a separate ten-day strike by Greek seaman, which has created severe shortages for many on the Greek islands.
A Panhellenic Seamen's Federation official said that the group decided to abandon its walkout after all-night negotiations with the government, which offered improved proposals on their demands for better bennefits and measures against unemployment.
International truck drivers have been left stranded by the dispute, complaining that they are losing thousands of dollars a day as their produce rots.
Driver Fred Noble from London was glad the strike had been settled because, apart from everything else, he was running out of books to read.
The socialist Greek government elected in September has introduced tough economic policies and tight fiscal disciplines in order to comply with conditions ahead of European Monetary Union.
