- Story Text: Hundreds of Philippine truck drivers went on strike on Thursday (September 15) over the government's attempt to ban their vehicles from Manila's traffic-clogged streets.
The drivers staged the strike because local officials plan to ban them from Manila's streets during daytime to ease congestion.
The government has also launched a plan to eliminate old right-hand drive trucks by November.
Officials said the right-hand drive trucks -- cheap, second-hand imports from Japan -- were responsible for a large number of accidents in the Philippines, a left-hand drive nation.
Srikers said they will not give up until the government meets their demands. Officials said they plan to open talks with the drivers.
Trucks began piling into Manila's South harbour after dawn.
There were no reports of violence although witnesses said strikers threatened to hurl rocks at the windshields of other trucks to stop them from plying their routes.
