- Story Text: Workers in factories, public transport and offices went on strike in Rome on Friday (July 12) to protest over the Italian Government's higher taxation plan.
The strike affected the Rome area and follows similar action in other areas of Italy, which are directed against the coalition Government's policies. The country's major union confederations plan to meet at the start of next week to discuss, among other things, the possibility of a general strike.
Italy's powerful Communist Party is also opposing the Government's austerity package, which includes a plan to take three-million-million lire (about 850 million dollars) out of the economy next year through higher taxation.
The new measures mean an increase in prices. Petrol and meet are the two first commodities affected. Rome's strikers showed their opposition with a demonstration in the city.
