- Story Text: Thousands of anti-United States (U.S.) protesters have
staged angry demonstrations around Pakistan in protest over
the continuing attacks on Afghanistan.
Around two thousand protesters gathered in Islamabad
on Friday (October 26) in an angry demonstration against the
United States.
After burning effigies outside the Red Mosque, the
protesters marched with anti-United States (U.S.) banners and
posters of Osama bin Laden, for a rally in central Islamabad.
"Long live Taliban", "Long live Osama", they chanted.
Qazi Hussain Ahmed, leader of the Jamiat Islami religious
party that organised the protest, addressed the crowds, urging
continued support for Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.
Similar scenes were repeated in Peshawar where a few
hundred people protested after Friday prayers.
"We are going to fight and fight and fight until the last
drop of blood is spilt," said one of the protesters.
The biggest of the protests took place in Karachi, where
around 40,000 activists from hardline Pakistani Islamic groups
took to the streets to demand the government be overthrown and
an end to U.S. raids on Afghanistan.
The protesters converged in Karachi's District East after
the main Friday prayers.
The protest call had been made by the Pakistan-Afghanistan
Defence Council, a coalition of more than two dozen hardline
and militant Islamic groups behind sometimes violent protests
staged across Pakistan since Islamabad sided with Washington
in its war on terrorism.
The council has organised regular protests in Karachi, a
teeming city of 12 million, but turnout has been low with just
5,000 people hitting the streets last Friday and only around
25,000 for the biggest to date, held two weeks ago.
Although Pakistan's pro-Taliban Islamic groups have been
unable to muster mass street support there have been bloody
clashes in various cities around the country and a number of
people killed.
The U.S. bombing raids, aimed at punishing the Taliban for
offering a haven to Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden,
entered their 20th day on Friday.
