- Story Text: Amid heightnened security Israel says it will
continue strikes against militants.
After a day of air strikes on Gaza that left 10
Palestinians dead and some 100 wounded, Israel said on
Tuesday (October 21) it would persist in its war against
Palestinian militants.
"Last night Israel was dealing with a Palestinian
vehicle which Israel knew with 100 percent certainty was
seeking to infiltrate Israel proper at Kibbutz Nahal Oz and
conduct a massive terrorist attack. Israel is left with no
choice but to thwart such attacks in order to protect its
civilians and keep its population safe," said Dore Gold,
advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Meanwhile, Israelis expecting the worst, heightened
security in city streets and public places, fearful that
Palestinian militants would keep their promise to avenge
the air raids by sending suicide bombers to kill Israelis.
In Ramallah in the West Bank, Palestinian Minister Saeb
Erekat condemned the latest raids on Gaza.
"We condemn with the strongest possible terms the
bloody massacre that was committed in Gaza. Eleven people
were killed and more than one hundred people wounded. This
is the most disproportionate use of force in history. We
are a people with no army, no navy and no airforce and to
see the Israeli F-16s and Apaches targeting with their
missiles the most densely populated area in the world
the Gaza Strip is something of a crime," said Erekat.
