- Story Text: On the eve of India's nationwide rail strike, communists and Marxists called for additional stoppages in Calcutta and West Bengal state on Tuesday (May 7).
The response was varied. Some shops and factories were closed, and militants marched through the streets. But in places life continued as normal.
Labour unrest in India was polarised by the arrest of 2,000 rail workers at the weekend. Several millions of workers have walked out in sympathy strikes because of the arrests. There's also huge discontent over the government failure to halt the rapid rise in food prices.
More than one-and-a-half-million rail workers were poised for the general strike due to start today (Wednesday). Their action backs up pay demands and threatens every aspect of Indian life -- food, power and industry.
