- Story Text: A pilots' strike at German flag carrier Lufthansa has
grounded some 500 flights across Europe, stranding nearly
40,000 passengers.
Pilots at German flag carrier Lufhansa went on strike
from midnight on Thursday (May 10) for the second time in less
than a week over a pay dispute in a move set to cause major
disruption to air travel out of Germany.
The 24-hour walkout is expected to delay or ground most of
Lufthansa's 1,100 scheduled passenger flights.
Thousands of holidaymakers and other travellers expected
to be affected.
A Lufthansa spokeswoman said 508 out of 1,100 scheduled
flights had already been cancelled, but 100 had flown.
Frankfurt airport, continental Europe's busiest, is worst
hit, but delays may spread to other European hubs.
Lufthansa spokesman Klaus Walther promised that holiday
makers would all reach their destination on Thursday, although
some might experience delays.
He said "We had scheduled about 40 European and national
flights for this day. Fortunately, some more crews showed up
and we can deliver at least 80 domestic and European flights."
Georg Fongern, a spokesman for the Lufthansa pilot's union
"Cockpit" said he considered the strike to be a success,
describing it as "one huge money destruction machinery."
He said he hoped the 24-hour strike would be enough to
force the management to meet the its pay demands and said
talks could start again as soon as later in the day.
Albrect Schulz, a Lufthansa passenger who arrived at
Berlin from Washington, said he found the crew on board "very
unhelpful".
"I hope the crew will be better prepared in an emergency
but during a strike they clearly don't know how to handle the
situation", Schulz said.
The strike follows a similar 12-hour stoppage last Friday
(May 4), the first full strike in the airline's 75-year
history.
Pilots are asking for salary increases of 35 per cent, on
average, with profit sharing.
Lufthansa, Europe's second largest air carrier after
British Airways, has offered pilots a 10.6 per cent average
raise this year, plus profit sharing.
