- Story Text: Missile strike on Gaza kills at least two
Palestinians.
An Israeli drone fired two missiles into the
southern Gaza city of Khan Younis on Thursday (December
30, 2004), killing two Palestinian militants and an 18-year-old
youth, witnesses and medics said.
Six other Palestinians were wounded in what Israeli
military sources said was a raid to root out militants who
regularly fire mortar bombs and rockets at nearby Jewish
settlements.
Clashes erupted when Israeli tanks and troops pushed
into Khan Younis shortly after midnight with tank fire and
two missile strikes from a drone hovering overhead.
The slain militants were from the Islamist group Hamas
while the youth was a civilian resident, medics said.
An Israeli military source said the missiles targeted
two groups of militants while a tank launched a shell to
drive back other gunmen trying to close in on soldiers.
"The army is operating in an area from which terrorists
continue to launch mortars and rockets into Israeli
communities in Gaza, and we will keep up such activities
until this firing stops," he said.
It was the third army raid into Khan Younis in the past
week to eliminate militants behind constant rocket and
mortar salvoes against settlements in the occupied
territory.
Despite scores of such raids during a four-year-old
Palestinian revolt, attacks by the elusive, mobile mortar
and rocket squads have persisted, although they only rarely
cause casualties.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon intends to evacuate
all 8,000 settlers from among 1.3 million Palestinians in
Gaza next year under his plan to "disengage" from conflict
in some occupied territory, but vows to smash militant
groups first.
