- Story Text: A strike by Alitalia flight attendants has caused
disruption at Italy's Milan and Rome airports.
A 24-hour strike called by Alitalia flight
attendants has led to at least 90 flights being cancelled
on Monday (February 21, 2005) from Italy's Rome and Milan
airports.
The Italian flagship airline is planning to cut the
number of flight attendants by 900 units as part of a
broader Welfare plan which will also move another 700
employees from
Rome to Milans airport.
"I don't know exactly what is the reason for the
people of Alitalia to make a strike. That is a problem,"
said Juan Nadal from Caracas who was delayed and needed to
take a different plane in order to complete his homeward
journey.
Fifty of the flights cancelled are expected to be
international, with 28 national flights cancelled and 12
intercontinental, causing many passengers to seek
alternative routes.
"I suppose one has to put up with it, we were hoping
to get home earlier, now we'll be getting home late. It's
been a problem," said Charles Harrison from Gibraltar.
Another strike is expected next Monday (February 28)
as flight attendants continue their dispute over the
renewal of contracts.
