- Story Text: Israel has killed 10 Palestinians in missile strikes
on southern Gaza after ambushes claimed the lives of 11
Israeli soldiers..
Israel killed 10 Palestinians in missile strikes in
southern Gaza on Thursday (May 13) after back-to-back
ambushes claimed the lives of 11 soldiers in the worst blow
to the Middle East's mightiest army in two years.
The new spiral of violence intensified debate between
proponents and opponents of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon's plan to evacuate settlers from Gaza, now stalled
by rightist hardliners in his own Likud party.
Witnesses said two missiles hit a crowd in Rafah
refugee camp, killing seven people near the spot where
militants blew up an explosives-packed troop carrier on
Wednesday (May 12). Five soldiers in the vehicle were
killed.
An Israeli military source said the missiles were fired
at militants trying to plant bombs. In a second missile
strike in the camp hours later, three Palestinians were
killed, medics said. The army had no immediate comment.
On Tuesday (May 11), six Israeli soldiers died when
their armoured vehicle hit a landmine during a raid in Gaza
City's Zeitoun neighbourhood, a militant stronghold.
Israeli forces pulled out of Zeitoun early on Thursday
(May 13) in what Palestinian sources said was an
Egyptian-mediated deal under which militants returned the
remains of the servicemen.
Together the attacks marked the worst blow to the
Israeli army since April 2002, when 13 soldiers were killed
during an assault on a refugee camp in the West Bank town
of Jenin, a militant stronghold.
"Unfortunately we are witnessing those devastating
attacks encouraged by Palestinian Authority elements, by
elements in Tehran, Damascus and Lebanon. We have to deal
with all those elements in order to eliminate the terror
capabilities in our region," said the Israeli army's Chief
of Staff Moshe Yaalon, said.
Palestinian security officials later handed over the
soldiers' remains to Israel at a checkpoint north of Gaza,
saying they were obtained under order from Palestinian
President Yasser Arafat after militants gave them to Egyptian
mediators.
"We have said we would exert every possible effort
despite that our body parts have been scattered due to the
assassinations, the shellings, the tanks, the missiles. And
we have returned these bodies to Israel. But the question
to the Israeli society is - what are their soldiers doing
in the streets of Gaza and the streets of Rafah and so on?
This is the question that they have to answer," said senior
Palestinan negotiator Saeb Erekat.
Israel had said troops would stay put until the bodies
were recovered for a proper burial according to Jewish
tradition and it would do no deals with "terrorists".
The army said it raided Zeitoun to destroy weapons
workshops used by militants. Palestinian medics said 16
people, including militants and bystanders, were killed and
185 were wounded during the two-day siege.
