- Story Text: Scorsese, McQueen, Russell, Cuaron and Payne get nominations for the Academy Awards.
Filmmakers Martin Scorsese, Steve McQueen, David O. Russell, Alfonso Cuaron and Alexander Payne were nominated for Academy Awards on Thursday (January 16) in the Best Director category.
The race is a tight one, with many analysts predicting it will come down to two front-runners: Russell for his con-men caper "American Hustle" and Cuaron for his space thriller "Gravity," which has already garnered him a Golden Globe win. Both films tied for most Oscar nods - ten for each.
The rest of the pack are strong contenders, however. Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" earned Oscar acting nods for its stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill; McQueen's historical drama "12 Years A Slave" took home the Golden Globe for Best Picture Drama; and Payne's heartland dark comedy "Nebraska" has garnered Oscar nods for its two actors Bruce Dern and June Squibb.
