- Story Text: On Wednesday (18 December), the authorities in Western Kenya's largest town, kisumu, announced that a cholera outbreak which has killed at least 30 people is now under control. But the mass vaccination campaign throughout kenya continues as travel to and from the infected area remains restricted.
In the capital, Nairobi, on Wednesday, hundreds of people turned up at inoculation centres to receive cholera vaccinations. More than 18,000 people have so far been vaccinated since the outbreak was announced last week.
Kisumu itself -- on the shores of Lake Victoria -- has been isolated to enable health authorities to check spread of the disease, and only those with current vaccination certificates are allowed to enter the area. Many hundreds of people on their way to and from Kisumu were stranded by a travel ban imposed earlier in the week, as the kenyan Government made provision to prevent the disease spreading to other parts of the country.
The Kenyan Government has stated that the outbreak is confined to Kisumu, and that the inoculation centres working throughout the country are providing vaccinations for those people travelling abroad to countries where cholera vaccination certificates are required.
