- Story Text: Internationally famous sports coaches have begun work in Pakistan preparing the national team for the seventh annual Asian Games, which begin in Teheran, Iran, on September 1.
Coaches from the Soviet Union, The People's Republic of China and West Germany are already with the 150-member Pakistan squad at its head-quarters in the Hasan Abdal College, near Rawalpindi. The United States has also accepted a Pakistan invitation to assist with final training.
The first foreign coach to arrive was China's shuttle expert, Lu Wen-Hsuan, who said his Pakistani students were slow and lacked stamina. However, he said he was determined to make them "superfit".
One of the Soviet coaches, the weightlifter Kudianov, has his instructions translated into Urdu by an interpreter from the Soviet Embassy in Islamabad.
West Germany is represented by former Davis Cup star Peter Scholl, who is working with Pakistan's tennis players, and concentrating on the top-notchers like Haroon Rahim and Saeed Mir and one or two up-and-coming youngsters.
The six American coaches - three each for athletics and basketball - are due to arrive in Pakistan on Thursday (25 July).
The Pakistan team flies to Teheran on 25 August.
