France edged closer to a grand slam in the Five-Nations rugby championship on March 7 when they beat Scotland 28-22. They only now need to beat Ireland in Dublin on March 21 to have defeated all four other teams. The French dominated the early stages of their match against Scotland and five minutes after the interval led 22-7. After nine minutes. Bonneval scored the first on his three tries. Scotland hit back when Beattlie charged down Blanco's casual clearance to draw level at 4-4. Mesnel restored the French lead with a drop goal moments later. In the 27th minute the French scored a magnificent try through Bonneval and five minutes before half time Berol crossed the line for another. Hastings scored a penalty for Scotland but the French hit back gain with a penalty by Berot to lead 18-7 at half time. Scotland survived moments of crisis early in the second half when Blanco was tackled just short of the line but the French were no to be denied and Bonneval, seemingly covered, jinked over the corner for his third try. Scotland, anxious to avoid the rout that appeared on the cards, hit back with a Hastings penalty and soon began to enjoy their best period. Gavin Hastings fed his brother Scott for a great running try and then scored the conversion himself to bring his side to within six points. But the French held back the Scottish drive forward and managed another penalty by Berot, before Hastings completed the scoring with his fourth penalty.
