  • Story Text: Representatives from 104 developing countries met in Algiers on Saturday (15 February) to press for a better deal from developing countries. They are members of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (U.N.C.T.A.D.), the so-called Group of 77, the number of countries at their first meeting in 1974.

    The delegates were addressed by Algerian President Houari Bounmedienne who said the industrialised world's economic problems could be solved if the Third World was allowed to develop.

    During their four-day meeting the delegates will prepare a common line of action for a conference of the U.N. Industrial Development Organisation (U.N.I.D.O.) in Lima, Peru, in March.

    SYNOPSIS: At a conference centre west of Algiers, delegates from more than a hundred developing countries have gathered to press demands for a better deal from industrialised nations. Algerian President Houari Boumedienne addressed the opening session on Saturday. It's a meeting of the Group of Seventy-Seven - so called because of the number of founder countries. Delegates will bee using the four days of the conference to prepare a common approach to a U.N. Industrial Development Conference later this year.

    President Boumedienne told delegates that the industrial world's economic problems could be solved if the third world was allowed to develop. He said the current economic situation was not caused by the price of oil but by the immense majority of human beings kept in misery and under-development.

    Two main points will be discussed... first ways of making the best use of raw materials which are now exported, and second ... how to get a greater say in U.N. Industrial Development Organisation affairs.
