- Story Text: Troops from five member nations have been taking part in the annual North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) exercise, this year code named 'Autumn Forge'. The main component of the exercise took part at Saros Bay in the Aegean Sea on Tuesday (9 October).
SYNOPSIS: On this day, allied marine forces were to make an amphibious assault ??? under cover of ??? ???. The troops taking part belong to a subordinate command of NATO -- known as Allied Land Forces Southeastern Europe, or LANDSOUTHEAST, which is based at Izmir in Turkey.
The Commander in Chief of Allied Forces in Southern Europe (AFSOUTH) Admiral Harold Shear, headed the group of observing officers.
This combined landing forces was drawn from Turkish land and sea forces, with military units from Portugal, Italy, the United States and Britain. Altogether, there are some four hundred Turkish troops in LANDSOUTHEAST. This operation was planned to show NATO's amphibious capabilities in reinforcing the standing troops in its southern region. They demonstrated their tactical mobility, fire power and logistical support.
The Supreme Allied Commander of Europe and NATO commander. General Bernard Rogers, said in advance that the 'Autumn Forge' exercises -- due to end on October the 14th -- were designed to allow member nations to both pursue their individual training objectives while meshing into the broader functions of the Alliance. This enable the forces to test their tactics, check their equipment and train military leaders and their line troops.
