- Story Text: The leaders of Egypt, Syria and Jordan met in Cairo on Monday (10 September) to coordinate the political and military campaign against Israel. It was the first time that President Sadat of Egypt; King Hussein of Jordan, and Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad had met for two years. The meeting followed President Sadat's return to Cairo on Sunday after attending the conference of non-aligned nations in Algiers.
Observers say the fact that the meeting has been held indicates that President Sadat has buried his differences with Jordan, after two years of strained relations. Egypt and Syria disagreed with King Hussein's 1971 proposal to crete a new kingdom, embracing the eastern and Israeli-occupied western bank of the Jordan River. The project was shelved after Egypt and Syria broke off diplomatic relations with Jordan.
Recently, however, there have bee extensive, behind-the-scenes meetings between representatives of the three countries.
The summit is in line with President Sadat's moves to mobilise all Arab potential in the conflict with Israel. The President has emphasised the need for a unified and strong Arab front -- regardless of differences within the Arab world.
