- Story Text: A Christmas charity fund in Nairobi the Kenyan capital means a happier new year for many people.
Donations to the fund -- which has a target of GBP 7,500 (18, 000 U.S. dollars) -- had reached just under GBP 6,000 (15,000 U.S. dollars) on Wednesday (December 19).
The Mayor of Nairobi and the patron of the fund, Miss. Margaret Kenyatta, said she was confident the target figure would be reached this year and appealed for more donations.
She was speaking after switching on the Christmas tree lights outside Nairobi City Hall.
Miss. Kenyatta said about 27 organisations had benefited from the money collected last year, and many more organisations would benefit this year.
The Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund was founded 25 years ago to help welfare organisations and people in need.
