  • Story Text: Troops from 11 nations paraded in front of the royal palace in Brussels on Sunday (September 4), capping weekend commemorations to mark the 50th anniversary of Belgium's liberation from four years of Nazi occupation.

    Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene paid tribute to the allies as well as soldiers, resistance fighters, political prisoners and deportees.

    Troops representing the United States (U.S.), Britain, Belgium, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia marched past Belgium's King Albert II, Queen Paola, Britain's Prince Andrew, government ministers and other dignitaries.

    Large crowd braved rain to watch the parade and a military flypast, which was to be followed by a party in the neighbouring Brussels Park and military tattoos.

    Also on Sunday, vintage cars paraded through the streets of Brussels in a special "liberation" rally.

    Led by a 1907 Silver Ghost Rolls Royce, more than 400 old cars participated in the special 15th edition of the Rally of Brussels.

    The rally included a delegation of old English cars on display in continental Europe for the first time.
