- Story Text: Four players from Brazil's World Cup team, two from
fellow finalists Germany and one each from Turkey, Senegal,
South Korea and Spain have been nominated for the Golden Ball
award for the best player in the 2002 World Cup.
The nominations were announced by the coaches of
the last three world champions - Brazil's Carlos Alberto
Perreira, Germny's Franz Beckenbauer and France's Aime
Jacquet, on Thursday (June 27) in Yokohama .
Brazil led the list in nominees for the Golden Ball
award recognising the best player at the World Cup tournament.
The four "R"s - Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Roberto
Carlos were all nominated by FIFA's technical committee for
the award which will be voted on by the international press
covering the World Cup.
Rivaldo and Ronaldo are also competing for the golden boot
award which honours the top scorer at the World Cup.
Ronaldo leads Rivaldo by 6 goals to 5 and both will be
looking to add to their tally against fellow nominee - Gemran
goalkeeper Oliver Kahn - in the final on Sunday.
Kahn's teammate Michael Ballack was also nominated but he
will miss the final after picking up a second yellow card in
the semi-final against South Korea.
The nominations were announced by the coaches of the last
three world champions - Brazil's Carlos Alberto Perreira,
Germny's Franz Beckenbauer and France's Aime Jacquet.
Former Brazilian coach Parreira explained why Brazil had
four nominations.
"I don't think no other country in the world has this
resource of individual players as we do. And they are really
making the difference in this competition. Its not by chance
that we have two players with five goals and they could be the
top scorers of the competition and this is the great asset we
are going to take for the final. The German don't only have to
stop only one player they have to care four good Brazilian
players. And there were are relying on this individual ability
to solve and resolve and win the World Cup," said the man who
led Brazil to their fourth world title in USA-1994.
Ronaldo is a past winner of the trophy which was
inaugurated in 1982.
Beckenbauer begged to differ as he was looking forward the
first World Cup
match ever between powerhouses Brazil and Germany who will
contest the final, on Sunday (June 30), in Yokohama.
"I hope it will be a very exciting final, sorry Carlos,
I think the German team will win the game. But we have to wait
and see, but maybe over time I don't know. But the most
important thing is to show the whole world how good and
beautiful football can be," added Bekceknbaauer who won the
World Cup as a player in 1974 and as a coach in 1990.
