- Story Text: Representatives of 13 nations, including the world's main grain exporters, three international agencies and the European Common Market met in Italy on Friday (29 November) to take crucial decisions on food aid for the world's starving.
The meeting was held at the Rome headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (F.A.O.) and could mean life or death for millions of people facing starvation in 32 countries.
The Director-General of F.A.O., Dr. Addeke Boerma, later reported that the grain-exporting countries attending the meeting has agreed that they had over 7.5 million tons of grain available for shipping to countries in need of food. Unfortunately, he added, they could not agree how this was to be paid for.
"The world we live in is not an ideal world", Dr. Boerma declared, "it talks time to get financial resources, unfortunately, even in this case". Further negotiations will take place in the United States in December to resolve the problem.
The Rome meeting decided that part of the cost would be covered by existing food aid programmes. The rest must come from the countries in need, assisted by "traditional and potential new donors".
