  • Story Text: In France, five Western nations have agreed on a series of recommendations for dealing with security in Zaire and the country's crumbling economy. Reports from the meeting in Paris on Monday (5 June) between senior officials from the United States, Britain, West Germany, Belgium and France, said there were difficulties in reaching agreement on the sort of aid that West should give to African states.

    SYNOPSIS: After more then 12 hours of non-stope talks a senior official from the French delegation, Louis Delamare, issued a final communique on the marathon closed meeting. But he gave to details of the recommendations, which will now go to the respective governments for approval. However Reuters quoted conference sources as saying an agreement was reached in give Zaire substantial assistance to help rebuild its economy, shattered by last month's incursion into Shaba province. The sources said the one-day talks, which went on seven hours longer then scheduled, were also aimed at demonstrating western determination to resist Soviet and Caban penetration into Africa. Monsieur Delemare told newsmen that the conference also discussed what aid could be given to other African countries threatened by external aggression.

    Conference sources said a recommendation to provide aid to Zaire was based on an economic plan put forward by the country's President, Mobuto Sese Seko. The plan will be submitted for approval to a meeting next week in Brussels of Zaire's major creditor countries and of World Bank and International Monetary Fund representatives.
