- Story Text: Zambians have welcomed the news that oil and gas have been discovered in the northwest bordering oil-producing Angola. The discoveries were made in area that already has one of the world's largest reserves of copper.
Exploration began in 2004 and since then a special cabinet committee to select foreign oil firms to conduct comprehensive exploration has been appointed under mines minister Kalombo Mwansa.
He will be responsible for formulating policies and guidelines and on Tuesday he hoped they could also look for oil in other parts of the country.
"It is good for us although we don't know yet the extent of it,the quality of the oil we have but whatever amount we get is exciting news for Zambia. We are Just starting to look at the law and procedures for exploitation, construction and for disposal so work is just beginning. We have to ensure that the resource is enjoyed by everyone.," said Dr Mwansa.
Zambia currently imports crude oil from the Middle East and refines it before exporting petroleum products to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
