Workers laid absorbent boom around a pier off Gulf Shores beach on Friday (June 11) as a large patch of sheen and oil debris from the gushing Gulf of Mexico leak made landfall.
The beach remained open and vacationers strolled on the sugar white sands as hundreds of small tar balls and a thin layer of oil sheen washed up.
Dan Walker from Mobile wasn't worried about the oil as he walked along the beach..
"You just can't get in the water to swim and that's one reason why people come down and have a good time, get in the water to swim. But since the oil slick is in here, you can't swim so you just do the next best thing and walk along the beach," he said.
Stan Knighton expressed more concern.
"I think it's very catastrophic. I think it's something we're going to have to deal with for years to come. There's no easy solution to the clean up and I am really concerned for the health of our citizens and the people that are not taking note of the swimming advisory of the water," he said.
Millions of gallons of oil have poured into the Gulf since an April 20 offshore rig blast killed 11 workers and ruptured BP's deep-sea well. U.S. scientists on Thursday (June 10) doubled their estimate of the amount of oil flowing from the well.
BP has been capturing oil from the leaking well since installing a containment system, or cap, last week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
