- Story Text: Brazilian state oil company Petrobras added a new production platform in the offshore Tupi area on Thursday (October 28) that will enable it to boost output at one of the country's largest oil discoveries.
Petrobras linked the platform in the city of Angra dos Reis in Rio de Janeiro state, to a well in Tupi, which is believed to hold between 5 billion and 8 billion barrels of oil.
By the end of the year, production at Tupi will rise to 28,000 barrels per day from 14,000 barrels.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva attended the launching ceremony along with Petrobras President Jose Sergio Gabrielli and other authorities. After inaugurating the well and extracting oil, Lula said Tupi was a blessing for the future generations.
"I would never leave my post without stepping here in Tupi. I think this is the consecration of our sons, of our grandsons, of our grand-grandsons, of Brazil, as a whole," he said.
Brazilians will choose Lula's successor on the ballots on Sunday (October 31), as he prepares to step down next year after two consecutive terms.
The Tupi discovery, whose announcement in 2007 drew the world's attention to Brazil's energy potential, is expected to reach production of 100,000 barrels per day by 2012.
Output there is currently restricted by environmental regulations that limit the amount of natural gas Petrobras can flare in the area.
By January, the company will be able to transport the gas via a pipeline to other areas or re-inject it into a sub-sea well to avoid flaring, which releases carbon dioxide. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
