- Story Text: Brazilian shipbuilder OSX, run by billionaire industrialist Eike Batista, presented on Thursday (November 17) an offshore platform that will begin to produce oil from blocks off the country's shore late this year.
The platform will operate in the Waimea field at the Campos basin, which accounts for the bulk of Brazil's oil output off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state.
OSX purchased the platform in Singapore and spent around 610 million U.S. dollars to adapt it to national standards.
The platform has the capacity to produce up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day and will be leased to OGX, an oil and gas company also controlled by Batista. It is expected to begin operations by the end of December.
OSX President Luiz Carneiro said the company had ambitious plans for the future.
"OGX has around 30 billion dollars in its investment portfolio, which puts us in a very comfortable position to invest and take part in bidding processes in a very competitive way. There are massive opportunities coming up. Petrobras has recently announced its investment plan and said it should have around 40, 50 FPSOs until 2020. The demands are huge and we are planning to have conditions to meet them," he told reporters.
The OSX-1is the first offshore oil production ship of the company's fleet. Two more are expected to be brought from Singapore while the firm's shipyard gets ready.
OSX will build offshore oil platforms and production systems, drilling rigs and other vessels in the coming years to be leased to OGX or other companies. Its shipyard is under construction and will begin to build in late 2012.
Carneiro said the company aimed at producing high-quality facilities.
"Our intention is to select what is more attractive for us to build, which sometimes means choosing quality over quantity, building something that has more added value than just steel," he said.
Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista, the world's eighth-richest person, is the controlling shareholder of the EBX group, which is involved in industries including energy, mining, shipbuilding and logistics.
The South American giant is currently spurring shipyard projects to ensure the country's energy boom creates jobs for Brazilians and strengthens domestic industries. Critics say it could raise costs and slow development of the country's vast offshore reserves. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
