- Story Text: Salvage work on the Costa Concordia resumes after days of bad weather delayed operations on the stricken cruise liner.
Salvage crews on the island of Giglio prepared to resume operations on the capsized Costa Concordia on Sunday (February 12).
Snowfall and rough seas over the past week brought operations on the cruise liner to a standstill but calmer seas on Sunday offered hopes operations could now resume.
The barge ship carrying oil pumps that crews hope will remove more than 2,300 tonnes of diesel from the wreck headed out from the port of Giglio Island.
Operations are expected to take between three weeks and a month once they start but bad weather has delayed progress.
Experts measuring the movement of the wreck on Saturday (February 11) told Reuters Television the slippage had increased due to the weather conditions this week, but added that the velocity of the movement was not alarming.
The ship which lies half-submerged just metres from shore on a rock shelf had moved about 10-15 centimetres (4 to 6 inches) in the last two days, professor Filippo Catani of the University of Florence said on Saturday.
The 290 metre-long ship capsized and foundered close to the Tuscan island of Giglio on January 13 after its struck a rock which tore a large gash in its hull.
At least 17 people died in the accident and 15 others are still missing. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
