Speaking to Reuters outside the Central Anti-corruption Bureau's (CBA) in Warsaw, spokesman Jacek Dobrzynski said the raid was the bureau's largest operation to date.
"Yesterday afternoon agents of the Central Anti-corruption Bureau apprehended an international group consisting of eight people: two Italians, two Ukrainians, a woman from Moldova and three Poles. This group attempted to put counterfeit U.S. treasury bonds worth 100 million U.S. Dollars on the market here in Poland," he said.
The CBA also received help from the anti-terrorist bureau in this operation.
"The capture of bonds worth 100 million U.S. Dollars is on a scale unseen in Poland. This is the first operation of this type for the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau. We had a special group working on this, and we also asked the anti-terrorist bureau for support. These eight people were apprehended at the same time in two different regions of Poland," he added.
In a Central Anti-Corruption Bureau handout video, suspects were seen being escorted by police in one of the raids. All the detainees were being transferred to the District Prosecutor's office in Lublin in south-eastern Poland, authorities said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
