- Story Text: Finalists of a toilet paper wedding dress contest showed how to wipe away wedding costs in New York on Wednesday (June 27).
Using nothing more than toilet paper, tape, glue, needle and thread, designers got creative showcasing the versatility of the material.
Gowns were embroidered with pearls and crystals with form-fittingly constructed designs.
Dresses were finished with matching headpieces and clutch purses.
After an on-line tally Susan Brennan from Orchard Lake Michigan was crowned the winner for the second year in a row winning the prize money of $2,012 dollars (USD).
"I wanted something really original, something young brides would want to wear. It has the high-low hems, so your shoes can show, really fun back. So really fun with the cutouts very modern and it's my little bohemian cupcake," the 26-year-old designer said about her dress.
Brennan's "Bohemian Cupcake" dress was made out of 10 rolls of jumbo toilet paper and was made in just a week.
Brennan said she treated the material the same as any other textile.
"It's really not that hard, with the tape the needle get stuck you have to clean it off. You have to clean your machine more because a lot goes everywhere."
The models who wore the toilet paper dresses said that the gowns were not only easy on the eye but also on the body.
"It's kind of heavy but compared to most wedding dresses this is probably a lot lighter. But it's comfortable," said model Stephanie Pope.
The contest was hosted for the eighth time by Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com which operates a money saving website for prospective brides.
The event's official sponsor is tissue maker Charmin.
Organizers say they received over 700 entries for the contest. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
