- Story Text: Residents of Russia's Orekhovo-Zuyevo near Moscow reacted in shock on Tuesday (May 21) to a police shootout that Russian security services said was the successful thwarting of a potential terrorist attack on Russia's capital city.
Russian officials said that three militants planning a terrorist act on Moscow had been found living in a second story apartment in the Moscow suburb, Russian TV said, quoting a source at Russia's FSB intelligence service.
Police and security forces moved in on the building on Monday (May 20), closing off the surrounding neighborhood in an operation that killed two of the militants, and ended in the arrest of one.
"I also rented an apartment in Moscow and when all those explosions happened, then it was scary. Here, of course, we didn't expect this, not at all. You can expect anything in this region - drunkards and drug addicts - anything at all. But something like (this shoot out), of course not," building resident Natasha said.
"Well, it's unexpected of course. All of a sudden they're shooting, noise. I looked and there were a bunch of people running, they closed the road, everything froze everywhere. I told my daughter, Slava, go to the other room, just in case, and that's it. It ended quickly - it didn't take long," building resident Sergei told Reuters.
Residents said that the apartment where the suspected militants were found had been occupied by its current renters since March.
"Yes, it's relatively quiet and peaceful around here, you know. Well, there are drunks, yes, and drug addicts from time to time, but everyone is familiar with their own, and some measures have to be taken, but this, of course, it was a shock," building resident Irada said.
According to Russian intelligence reports, the militants were trained in Afghanistan or Pakistan. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
