- Story Text: What do you get when you mix toilet paper, glue, tape and some thread? If you're as crafty as these women, you might just be able to make a wedding dress fit to roll on down the aisle.
While 1,100 contestants competed in the Ninth Annual Cheap Chic Weddings Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest, there was just one winner crowned on Thursday (June 6) at the RK Bridal Salon in New York.
Mimoza Haska, a hair dresser from South Carolina said she was inspired by the challenge to create something glamorous and beautiful out of the every day disposable material. She used only the allotted materials -- Charmin toilet paper, tape, glue and thread -- but her glue did have sparkles in it, which created the lavish effect on the dress' bodice.
"I like clothes. I like art so I'm very attracted to different art, different design and different stuff, crafts that people make. So it was no particular reason that I started. It's just I always create and I like to keep doing it and see where it takes me."
For her labor of love, Haska took home a $2,000 (USD) cash prize.
Competition was tough - most of the gowns featured headpieces with ruffles, faux embroidery, pleats and even lace effects.
How many rolls does it take to complete a dress? Designers said the numbers varied from 2 to 40 depending on the intricacies of the designs.
Runner up Susan Brennan is an aspiring designer. She was top dog last year. In fact, this is her third time competing in the event.
"You really have to be creative because you're using something other than fabric and it allows you to do things you couldn't do with fabric. So it's very fun. It's a challenge."
Judges narrowed down the final choices based on creativity and originality, but said picking a winner was challenging.
"It was not an easy decision. All the judges really had a lot of deliberation. But we felt that final dress, just the detail on it and the structure of it was just amazing and so that's how it ended up happening. But it was very, very close. All the dresses were amazing" said Victoria Schooler who represents Charmin.
