- Story Text: Ten contestants from around the U.S. rolled into New York to compete in the tenth annual Cheap Chic Weddings Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest on Thursday (June 12).
Three time champ Susan Brennan from Michigan was named the winner with her 1920's inspired gown.
"I wanted like lots of bedding, some lace work. Really intricate. And then I made it so that you could pull off the skirt. It's really romantic. I called it 'romance on a roll,' my mom helped me with the name. And you take off the skirt and it's kind of like a flapper dress. So you can party and dance," said Brennan who used 20 rolls of toilet paper, clear tape, glue and thread.
Brennan's look almost didn't make it down the runway after her model fell ill right before judging.
"My poor model wasn't feeling good. I'm sure it's not easy standing there as we try to put them on - it's a crazy day. So we had to yank her out of it and we threw me in it and it all worked out."
2008 winner Katrina Chalifoux from Tennessee took home the second place prize for her 28 roll dress, which model Stephanie Pope said is easy to wear.
"It's super light and easy to walk in. And I would totally wear this as a wedding dress."
Stunned third place winner Amber Mills of Texas created a vintage dress using toilet paper she found online that dates back to the 1970's.
The stay at-home mom entered the contest to supplement her families' income.
"I have MS (multiple sclerosis) so I can't work anymore. So I did this for the money to help my family. So this is huge and so I'm very thankful," said Mills who is $2,500 (USD) richer.
The ten finalists were chosen from over 1400 entries.
Laura Gawne and Susan Bain started the competition as a photo contest with a $500 prize. This year's winner took home a $10,000 prize and $5,000 went to second place, while the other finalist received a lifetime supply of Charmin toilet paper. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
