- Story Text: The fire in the Tupras refinery, hit by the
earthquake, has caused a critical shortage of petroleum
products in Turkey's largest city Istanbul. The refinery
supplied the majority of the city's petrol stations.
Long taxi queues formed in front of the petrol
stations in Istanbul on Saturday (August 21), as most of the
taxis use liquid petroleum gas from the refinery to run their
cars. The queues stretched up to one kilometre at some of the
petrol stations.
Tupras refinery, which was burning for five days after the
earthquake, is the main source that supports Istanbul with
petrol and gas.
The refinery has declared force majeure on all its sales
and purchases. The 226,000 barrel per day site at Izmit is one
of the linchpins of Turkey's privatisation programme.
The refinery fire had been one of the most dangerous
threats ignited by Tuesday's earthquake, which has killed more
than 10,000 people across the industrial northwest of Turkey.
