  • Story Text: As Israel began handing back the three Sinai oil fields to Egypt, in line with the recent peace agreement between the two countries, President Anwar Sadat visited the port of Ismailia and the Suez Canal headquarters on Friday (3 October).

    The President who flew in by helicopter was welcomed by Egyptian Prime Minister Salem, one of the key officials behind the peace accord that allows for a pull back by Israeli forces in the Sinai peninsular.

    President Sadat received a warm welcome from the local residents who are delighted that after years of inactivity Ismailia can expect a major boost from the canal re-opening.

    President Sadat regards the economic significance of the agreement as vital to Egypt. He has won a re-opening of the Canal through the Egyptian offensive in the last Middle East war -- and won back the oil fields.

    SYNOPSIS: Ismailia on the Suez Canal and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat arriving for a visit as Israel began handing back the three Sinai oil fields to Egypt in line with the recent peace agreement between the two countries.

    The President was met by Government officials for his tour of the port which suffered considerably from years of enforced idleness because of the Middle East situation.

    With the re-opening of the canal ad the assurance of the peace accord - ships have once again started taking the short cut from Europe to the Indian Ocean and the Far East.

    President Sadat regards the canal re-opening -- and the return of the oil fields -- as vital parts of the agreement. However, the accord has been condemned by Syria and the Palestinians.

    Syrian and Palestinian leaders call the agreement a betrayal. A view refuted by President Sadat. Meanwhile, in Jordan, one newspapers claims that Egypt will meet with Syria very soon to try and resolve differences. Syria says it has no knowledge of such a meeting.
