- Story Text: Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, has threatened that Cuba would be protected by Russian rockets if there should be American military intervention in the island. President Eisenhower retorted that the United States would never permit the establishment of a regime dominated by international Communism in the Western Hemisphere. Meanwhile Russian oil continues to arrive in Cuba and, July 10, a British tanker - the Clydefield - sailed into Havana Harbour to unload 16,000 tons of crude and fuel oil from the Soviet Port of Odessa.
The vessel was under charter to Russia for a single voyage, arranged before Cuban Premier Fidel Castro seized American and British oil refineries. Since the Companies European specialists left, Cuban foremen and supervisors have kept the refineries going with the aid of Soviet oil experts.
New Jersey's Standard Oil Company have warned that tanker owners doing business with the Soviet Union would risk being blacklisted. Opinion among tanker operators was that this plan would not be practicable.
All American-owned companies in Cuba have been ordered to present to the Ministry of Commerce comprehensive lists showing what fuels, lubricants, spare parts and raw material they have in stock. This, according to the Government is to serve as a "guide" in view of the United States economic reprisals against Cuba.
