- Story Text: As demand for natural gas grows in Europe, the industry has turned to the by-production of gas in Middle East oilfields where there is no need for it. Once, it was burned away -- but nor it is frozen into liquid and transported by sea-tankers to Europe. One such gas-freezing plant is at the port Marsa El Brega in Libya, and VISNEWS cameraman Ken Ludlow visited it recently to take this film.
SYNOPSIS: Demand for natural gas in Europe has been growing sharply in recent years, quicker than European gas-fields can cope with it. At the same time oil experts noticed that gas by-products in Middle East oilfields were usually burned away as being useless. So it was pipelined to ports where gas-freezing techniques were designed to turn it into liquid -- which was then suitable for transport by tanker to the gas-hungry industrial centres in Europe.
One such gas-freezing plant is at the port of Marsa El Brega on Libya's Mediterranean coast. The plant is fed with gas by a one-hundred-mile (161 kilometres) pipe-line to deser??? oilfields, and following the freezing operation in a highly-complex series of operations the liquid gas is loaded onto tankers for shipment -- in this case, to Italy and Spain.
The harbour at Marsa El Brega also had to be extensively re-designed to cope with the gas plant and extra shipping, but since the work was completed and operations begun whole new fields of industry have been started in Spain and Italy as a result of sufficient fuel -- and new industries have meant new jobs and increased prosperity -- prosperity by pipe-line from North Africa.
